Bus 174
1. In June 2000 Sandro Rosa was one of the most publicized criminals in Brazil. Sandro boarded a public bus, intending to rob the passengers. However, the incident developed into a hostage situation, which was broadcast live by most Brazilian national television channels.
2. What Sandro did was wrong, but he was driven to do this due to the fact of his hard early life. Extreme poverty can, in some cases, lead people to take extreme measures. In Brazil, little attention is given to homeless children might have also triggered Sandro to take such drastic action. Events of his childhood have been examined for their influence on Sandro's choices.
Sandro's biological father abandoned his mother upon learning that she was pregnant. When he was six years old, he witnessed the murder of his mother by thieves. He then became a "street kid" around Rio de Janeiro, under the nickname "Mancha". He became a drug addict, stealing to sustain a cocaine habit, and using other drugs, including glue. He also never learned to read or write, rotating between the streets and Brazil's horrific juvenile and adult jails.
Sandro frequented the Catholic Candelaria church in Rio de Janeiro. He would sleep and eat there, and made friends with other homeless children.
3. Sandro should have for starters, not aimed a gun on the hostage's head or threaten to kill them. He shouldn't have gotten on the bus neither try to rob someone, but it would be understandable considering his past. He should have maybe gotten out of the bus without holding someone as a human shield or resisting to stop etc. During negotiations with the police, Sandra demanded weapons and a new driver to drive the bus (since the original driver had escaped through a window) which i think it was not the right thing to do even though he had no choice and no idea that this was going to happen.
Though he never had any intentions to kill any of the hostages, it was still not right to threaten to start killing the hostages if the authorities didn't do anything to help him with his demands.

I can see you have a sound understanding of both the social and economic factors that contributed to this incident. You have included appropriate images to enhance your post, and written clearly using some of your own research. To get a higher grade you could have included a lot more depth in your first answer about the events that unfolded that day, and expanded your final answer exploring the other options Sandro could have taken. 6/8 Criteria D.
